It is about that time to put on your costumes, get out your pumpkin bucket, and have a great time this Halloween! If you plan to trick-or-treat, there are a few tips you need to know to ensure your safety:

  • Do not trick-or-treat alone! You should always have someone with you, whether it is a friend, relative or older sibling. Plus, it’s more fun if you go in groups!

  • Trick-or-treat in a familiar area. It is safe to trick-or-treat in an area or neighborhood that you are familiar with. You know the people handing out the candy, and it’s a good way to avoid getting lost, especially on Halloween night!

  • Make yourself easily seen in the dark. If you are going to trick-or-treat after the sun goes down, it is a good idea to carry a flashlight around with you. Also, wearing light colored clothing helps cars notice you.

  • Don’t go knocking from door to door. This can be very tempting when you want to get a lot of candy, but it can be very dangerous. You should only go to the houses that you are familiar with (tip #2) and only the ones that have a light on. If the house is dark, that’s usually a sign that they aren’t passing out candy.

  • Be aware of the people you know and don’t know. This is tricky, especially on Halloween, because everyone is in costume. Make sure that you can recognize trick-or-treating group with their costumes on. You don’t want to end up with people that you don’t know.

  • Check your candy. When you are done trick-or-treating, check your candy before eating it. If the candy is slightly opened, or you are not sure what it is, throw it away! It is better for your health and your safety.

With these trick or treating tips, you are all set for a safe and fun Halloween. Happy Halloween!
